Utter dismay and disbelief has been the reaction in Forkhill after it was used as a dumping ground by those involved in the illegal fuel trade.
One local political representative branded it “environmental terrorism”.
Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Larkin said: “This blatant disregard for the local community and the resultant pollution of Irish soil and rivers can rightly be described as terrorism.
“Those involved in these nefarious activities need to take stock of the damage they are doing to the health and well being of both the South Armagh community and the environment.
“The continuing abuse of this area has to stop. These acts are viewed as acts of environmental terrorism.
“The criminals engaged in these activities care about nothing but money. Their greed is causing great harm to our environment and concern amongst the community.”
