Two killed and three injured in crash on way to school debs ball in Co Monaghan

Two people have been killed and three others injured in a collision in County Monaghan.

The two vehicle collision happened on the N54 between Clones and Smithboro at about 6.45pm tonight (Monday).

The three injured were taken to hospital, where two are described as being in a critical condition.

It is understood that all five were travelling in the same vehicle and had been on their way to a secondary school debs ball when the tragedy happened.

The road is closed and is likely to remain so for some time.

Gardai, in a statement, had confirmed, “three persons have been taken to hospital, two of which are in critical condition”, while adding that “two fatalities remain at the scene”.

There are no further details at present.
