Body of young woman in her 20s recovered from Ulster Canal in Monaghan

It is understood that the woman – who was discovered in the waterway on St Patrick's Day – is from Northern Ireland and a post mortem is due to be carried out

The body of a young woman – understood to be from Northern Ireland – has been discovered in a waterway in Monaghan.

Gardai are investigating the cause of the death.

The remains were removed from the Ulster Canal at Monaghan town at around 8.30am on Sunday.

A post mortem is due to be carried out.

Gardai confirmed the discovery in a statement.

A spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of a discovery of a body in County Monaghan on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

“The body of a woman in her 20s was recovered from the Ulster Canal in Monaghan town at approximately 8.30am.

“The body has since been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan.

“A postmortem examination has been arranged and the results of this examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.

“No further information is available at this time.”
