‘All round master of every job’ at Armagh’s St Catherine’s steps into his well-earned retirement after 45 years!

'What really makes Gabriel special isn’t just the number of roles he’s had — it’s the heart he’s put into every single one of them'

After an extraordinary 45 years of dedicated service, a much-loved member of the Saint Catherine’s, Armagh community is stepping into a well-earned retirement.

Mr Gabriel McGuigan – caretaker, technician, supervisor, valued member of the school’s support staff and all round master of every job across the school – is hanging up his tools, leaving behind a legacy of commitment that will be felt for generations to come.

Known to staff and pupils alike as the person who could always be relied upon, he has been at the very heart of school life for over four decades.

His role extended far beyond that of caretaker and technician: he was, in many ways, the backbone of the school.

From the early mornings unlocking the school gates to the last checks at the end of the day, his presence ensured that everything ran smoothly.

Whether it was repairing essential equipment at a moment’s notice, maintaining the school grounds to the highest standard, or quietly solving countless behind-the-scenes challenges, he approached every task with dedication, skill and good humour.

His contribution to school shows and productions was also invaluable. Generations of pupils took to the stage supported by the sets he built and the technical expertise he provided.

From scenery to stage management, he played a vital role in bringing performances to life, often working long hours to ensure each show was a success.

But his commitment did not stop there. He also took on the responsibility of driving the school bus, ensuring pupils travelled safely, and supervised in the school canteen, always offering a friendly face and a steady presence.

No task was ever too big or too small – if something needed done, Gabriel was the one who made sure it happened.

His kindness and generosity extended far beyond the school gates. Through participation in outreach trips to Uganda, he helped support communities in need, embodying the school’s Sacred Heart Goals of Faith, Community and Social Awareness.

Those who travelled with him speak highly of his willingness to help wherever he could, always putting others first.

Gabriel celebrated his retirement in school with a special mass accompanied by his wife Martina and mother-in-law, Mrs Kathleen Mallon, both of whom are also past members of staff in the school and current and past members of the teaching and support staff who have shared in his 45 year career in St Catherine’s.

Members of the pupil body lined the corridors to give Mr Gabriel McGuigan the rousing send off that he so richly deserves.

School Principal, Mrs Noeleen Tiffney, thanked Gabriel and said, “What really makes Gabriel special isn’t just the number of roles he’s had — it’s the heart he’s put into every single one of them.

“This school hasn’t just been his workplace, it’s been a huge part of his life. It’s hard to sum up 45 years of service, because it’s not just time — it’s impact. It’s generations of students who’ve been helped, supported, transported, fed and quietly looked after along the way.

“Gabriel, was dependable, skilled, generous and always there when needed. The truth is he’s not just leaving a role, he’s leaving a huge gap.”
