Kilcluney Volunteers Flute Band to host annual parade and competition in Markethill

Large crowds expected in town for 'First Friday in June' parade

Kilcluney Volunteers Flute Band will be hosting their annual parade and competition on Friday, June 2 in Markethill.

Widely acknowledged as one of the premier parades in the country and known throughout the band scene as “The FirstFriday in June”, a large turnout of bands is once again expected on the streets of Markethill, creating a carnival atmosphere in the town.

A variety of some of the best silver, pipe, accordion and flute bands from across the country will also be present, providing entertainment to suit all musical tastes.

Bands from across Northern Ireland have confirmed their intention to be in attendance on the night, further underlining the parade as being one of the largest cultural festivals in the province. A number of bands will also be making their inaugural appearance in Markethill.

There is always a noticeable air of anticipation in the village each year as the night approaches and such is the attraction of the event, many spectators now travel large distances to enjoy the parade. An increasingly large number of tourists are also now staying in the local area for a few days and the parade provides a welcome boost to businesses with shops and food establishments all benefitting from the increase in footfall.

As is now traditional, fancy dress characters will be on hand to entertain the younger children, and thousands of promotional gifts will be distributed.

Kilcluney have worked closely with the local community to ensure that the parade is as family friendly as possible and the band is very proud of the atmosphere they have nurtured and achieved at it.

The band would appreciate everyone in attendance on Friday obeying the parking restrictions and complying with council by-laws, in line with the family ethos of the event.

The parade starts at 7.30pm sharp, and local bands are encouraged to parade early to try and limit the inevitable queues.

A spokesperson for Kilcluney said: “This years parade is shaping up to be another fantastic night of entertainment for the whole family. Members of the band have been working tirelessly towards this date for months ensuring that everything is in place for a memorable night in Markethill. It promises to be a powerful display of music and colour with bands from every musical genre in attendance.

“Kilcluney are always seeking dedicated new recruits of all ages. Tuition classes for the flute and drum sections commence at 8pm every Monday night at Kilcluney Orange Hall on Mowhan Road. All new members will be given a warm welcome and the band will endeavour to organise transport if required.”
