The Under-18 Interprovincial Championship was held at Athlone on 23-25 July and, having been selected to play for Ulster, County Armagh Golf Club’s Joe Rooney more than held his own among the country’s elite juniors.

In the prestigious GUI event, which assumes a round-robin format, Joe was part of the seven-man Ulster side that defeated Munster 6-4 and Connacht 9-1 on its way to a commendable second-place finish in the overall standings.

The competition was eventually won by Munster, who completed an impressive provincial triple crown over their provincial adversaries.

On a parochial note, Joe himself performed admirably across these three days of high-level golfing action. The young scratch-handicapper prevailed in three of his five matches in a tournament that featured the entirety of Ireland’s under-19 international panel. So, a great learning experience and a magnificent showing from Rooney … well done, that man!
