Three young female boxing champions from south Armagh will be honoured at a special homecoming in Crossmaglen next Friday night.

Amy Broadhurst won Youth gold at the Europeans while Shauna O’Callaghan and Orla Garvey both picked up Junior silver medals.

Irish coach Liam Brereton said: “The entire squad were magnificent. We were using a squad of eighteen and nine won medals and with a little bit of luck it could have been more.”

Now people from across south Armagh are being urged to make their way to Crossmaglen next Friday to give Ireland’s conquering heroes the welcome home they deserve.

On Friday, September 11 at 6.30pm the three medal winning local girls will be honoured by the Newry, Mourne and Down Chairperson Naomi Bailie at the Crossmaglen Community Centre.

“This was a tremendous achievement by these incredibly talented young women and it’s only right that they should be honoured by the council,” said councillor Terry Hearty.

“Orla, Shauna and Amy have been excellent ambassadors for the area, indeed the country and I’ve no doubt that the people of south Armagh will turn out onto the streets of Crossmaglen to show them how proud they are of their achievements.

“These young ladies displayed true grit, determination and self-confidence to go face-to-face with the best of Europe and come away champions; not only are they great ambassadors for this area, they’re true role models for girls across the country.”
