New Clare Glen bridge ‘must be a priority’ as removal of old crossing moves closer

A replacement for the ageing footbridge at Clare Glen has to be treated as a priority, a local councillor has insisted, as Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council prepares to move ahead with enabling works.

TUV councillor Keith Ratcliffe said he has been raising “continued lobbying and concerns about the health and safety” of the current footbridge over the River Cusher, which he describes as “no longer fit for purpose”.

He said he was encouraged by an update given at Tuesday night’s Environmental Services Committee meeting, where members were told that proposed enabling works – including the removal of the old bridge – are due to take place shortly, subject to ratification at the next full council meeting.

“This represents an important first step towards delivering a much-needed replacement bridge,” Cllr Ratcliffe said.

He thanked council officers for their “work and engagement following numerous site meetings and continued lobbying on this issue”, and confirmed that officers are now working to secure funding for a new structure.

However, he warned that if external funding cannot be obtained, the council must be prepared to finance the project itself.

“While I sincerely hope external funding can be secured as soon as possible, if this is not forthcoming, Council must step up and fund the replacement bridge itself,” he said.

“The safety of local residents and those who use this crossing cannot be overlooked.

“I will continue to press for progress and work with Council officers to ensure this much-needed replacement bridge is delivered.”
