A Co. Armagh primary school is one step closer to its dream of a state-of-the-art new build after ‘major works’ approval was granted.

St. Joseph and St. James’s Primary School in Poyntzpass said they were “beyond delighted” to share the news, with approval having been granted on March 4.

“Sincere thanks to the Project Team, who endeavour to work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring our children will receive a new state-of-the-art facility for the future”, the school said in a post on social media.

A communication statement published by the school reads: “On 22 January 2013 the Minister for Education announced the names of twenty-two schools to advance in planning under the Department of Education’s Major Capital Programme. St Joseph and St James’s Primary School was included in this announcement.

“Progress on the project has undoubtedly been slow due to the lack of suitable sites in the Poyntzpass village area, however considerable work has been undertaken since the project was announced.

“A Project Steering Group has been established and remains in place to direct the project through the development stage.”

It added: “A new Integrated Consultants Team (ICT), McAdam Design were appointed in March 2020, and have been progressing work on a technical feasibility study to show potential options of how a modern, fit for purpose school can be delivered for the pupils and staff of St Joseph and St James’s Primary School.

“This process is ongoing and is expected to conclude later in 2024. The project will then progress through the Business Case stage, design and planning stages.”

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty commented: “Huge well done to principal Mrs Wadsworth, her teaching team and the Board of Governors on receiving confirmation today that ‘Major Works’ approval has been granted for the new ‘St. Joseph and St. James’s P.S. build.

“The hard work of the Project Team who are determined to develop a new state-of-the-art facility for children must be applauded. Well done to all involved.”
