Laurelvale Cricket Club have expressed their ‘disappointment’ after their outdoor covers were damaged this week.

The damage to the equipment was discovered on Tuesday night (July 2), prompting the club to release a statement on social media urging people to speak to their children.

It read: “These covers are not only expensive but they are a vital piece of equipment in helping us prepare our ground to host matches. In the coming weeks we not only have our own club games but we are hosting Inter Provincial games and a NCU Cup Final.

“We take pride in the facilities that we provide both club members and visitors and kindly ask those responsible for the damage to please refrain from doing so.”

The statement added: “In the last few weeks we have had issues with our batting cages being misused and now damage to the covers. Should this continue further measures will have to be implemented regarding the use of our facilities which is something we don’t want to have to do.

“Please share this message around our community and we kindly ask parents to have a word with your children to ensure they don’t use our equipment as climbing frames or trampolines as it could have an expensive result.”

Cusher TUV councillor Keith Ratcliffe commented: “Extremely disappointed to hear this news. This is a vital piece of equipment for Laurelvale Cricket Club. I have raised this issue with the local police.”

At the start of the year, Laurelvale Cricket Club submitted plans to council to build an exciting new sports complex on their site.

The club – which celebrates its 150th anniversary year – would demolish its clubhouse and replace with three new-build facilities for the local community, including cafe/bar, function rooms and indoor multi-sports training venue.

A planning decision is expected in due course.
