Elderly couple tied up and threatened with poker in violent burglary

An elderly coupled were tied up and threatened with a poker during a burglary in county Armagh last night (Thursday).

Police in Armagh are appealing for information following the aggravated burglary at a house in the Portadown Road area of Tandragee.

It was reported that shortly after 9.30pm, a number of men, one armed with a poker, forced entry to the house and threatened the occupants, a couple aged in their 70s.

A sum of cash was handed over before the men tied up the occupants and left them locked in a bathroom.

The man and woman suffered minor cuts to their wrists and were left badly shaken by their ordeal.

Inspector Philip Quinn said: “The intruders spoke with southern accents and wore black clothes, scarves covering their faces and woollen hats. It is unclear at this time if they left the scene in a vehicle or on foot.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have any information about the incident, or who witnessed any suspicious activity to contact officers in Armagh on 101 quoting reference number 1221 of the 09/03/17. Or alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
