Thieves target ‘elderly and vulnerable farmers’ in south Armagh

Heartless thieves are preying on elderly and vulnerable farmers in south Armagh.

And Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Magennis has said that more must be done to tackle the scourge of rural and agricultural crime in our community.

The Slieve Gullion councillor was speaking following a recent spate of agricultural thefts in the south Armagh area.

“We’ve learned of a number of rural thefts that have taken place recently in the south Armagh area,” councillor Magennis explained.

“The current cost of living crisis means that any loss of or damage to agricultural equipment could be crippling to local farms who are already struggling with rising prices of feed and fuel.

“These thieves operate at will, targeting elderly and vulnerable farmers and they offer nothing to our society.

“I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and look out for their elderly or farming neighbours.

“The farming community and the agriculture economy play a central role in our society and the PSNI need to ensure that every possible measure is taken to ensure they are adequately protected.”
