Car ploughs into River Bann in Portadown as driver escapes and swims to safety

Shillington's Bridge Portadown

A car entered the River Bann in Portadown before its driver miraculously managed to escape and swim to safety this evening (Saturday).

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the dramatic incident at the Shillington slipway earlier tonight.

The driver managed to escape the sinking car and swim to the safety of the river banks before the car became completely submerged in the water, close to the Northway bridge.

The driver was treated by paramedics following the incident, however, their condition is unknown at this stage.

Elsewhere, and in an unrelated incident, police made a number of arrests in the Hoys Meadown area of the town.

DUP councillor Lavelle McIlwrath praised the PSNI for their swift response to all the incidents this evening.

“It has been a busy night already for officers in Portadown but I want to thank them for their prompt and efficient response to these serious situations in our town this evening,” he said.
