A man was headbutted and punched in the face at the reception area of Craigavon Courthouse.
Details were given on Friday at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court in the same courthouse.
Michael Anthony Grimley (36), of Churchill Gardens in Portadown, was sentenced for an assault which happened on Monday September 30 last year.
A prosecutor told the court the defendant came down stairs in the courthouse around 1pm on September 30 and was “verbally abusive” to a man.
The man said he knew Grimley who headbutted and punched him in the face.
The incident was captured on CCTV.
The defendant told police he had acted “as a result of provocation”.
Defence barrister Damien Halleron said the defendant’s sister was the complainant in a case against Grimley’s victim.
Mr Halleron added: “The red mist came down” after “words were exchanged” and he accepts now “he simply should have walked away”.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan said it was an “attack in a court building” which was an “aggravating feature”.
The judge said a pre-sentence report showed remorse was “genuine”.
Fining the defendant £300 and ordering him to pay £300 compensation to the man who was assaulted, the judge told Grimley: “I appreciate you say you were provoked but you can’t take the law into your own hands”.
