A drop-in support service has been organised for anyone experiencing “distress or trauma” following the tragic road death of a man in Newry.
The service has been organised by charity organisation The Road Ahead NI and offers the support of their counselling team and volunteers in the wake of 67-year-old John O’Brien’s death.
Mr O’Brien was identified as the victim of a single vehicle incident involving a lorry in the Albert Basin area of Newry on October 8.
Regrettably, the tragic incident was marred by the sharing of deeply distressing imagery and video across social media.
Police were made aware of a distressing image being circulated from the scene of this road fatality and requested that the sharing of this graphic scene image to cease immediately, out of consideration for the family impacted.
They added that persons found to be sharing the image may be committing the offence of improper use of public electronic communications network.

Advertising their drop-in service, The Road Ahead NI added: “We understand the impact and distress that witnessing such a tragedy or viewing a video or photograph of the incident can cause.
“We are holding a drop-in for anyone that feels impacted. You can call in and speak in confidence to one of our counsellors or volunteers.”
The support service will be held at Ballybot House in Newry on Wednesday October 15 from 6pm to 8pm.
The Road Ahead NI are affiliated with Road Safe NI Charity and provide support to anyone affected by a road crash.
