Book of Condolence opened for ‘kind and wonderful’ man following tragic Newry collision

A pedestrian who tragically died after being struck by a lorry in Newry has been named locally as John O’Brien.

Mr O’Brien, who was affectionately known as “Scottish John”, was a well-known and much-loved member of the local community, remembered for his kindness, humour and warm personality.

Following the tragic incident on Wednesday, heartfelt tributes have been pouring in from the many people and groups who knew and loved him.

The Salvation Army in Newry has opened a book of condolence for anyone wishing to pay their respects.

In a message shared online, they said: “A book of condolence is open at The Salvation Army for anyone who would like to pay their respects to John O’Brien — our lovely Scottish John.

“Open from 10am–2pm and 4pm–7pm today and tomorrow. On Saturday we’ll be open from 10am–1pm. We have created a space to reflect, share memories and grieve together.”

Meanwhile, in an earlier statement, The Haven – which is run by the Salvation Army, where John was a much-loved member –described him as a “true gentleman” and “a kind and wonderful soul”.

In a heartfelt statement, they said: “We shared a wonderful afternoon together yesterday — memories that will stay with us forever.

“John was a true gentleman, a kind and wonderful soul who touched the hearts of everyone around him. He will forever be remembered with love and warmth in our hearts by all of us at The Haven.

“Our thoughts, love, and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

“As a mark of respect, we will be opening our doors both today and Friday for anyone who would like to gather, reflect, share memories, or simply find comfort by being surrounded by friends.”

Members of Rostrevor Men’s Shed, where John was a long-standing member, also paid tribute to their “good friend and long-time Shedder”.

A statement from the group read: “It is with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the death of our good friend and long-time Shedder, John O’Brien, in such tragic circumstances.

“The committee and members would like to express their sincere condolences to his sister Marie and brother-in-law Fintan at this sad time. Rest easy, old friend. You will be sadly missed.”

Online, friends described John as a “true gentleman with a beautiful smile and great sense of humour”, while others fondly recalled his sharp wit, love of banter, and willingness to help others.

One tribute read: “Such a shock to learn of the death of our friend John. It was great to see him back on Saturday, reading his paper and chatting with his Shedder football mates. He will never be forgotten in the Rostrevor Men’s Shed. Rest in peace, Scotty John.”

Another added: “John — sharp, kind, and never without a bit of banter. A proud Scotsman with a sense of fun, always ready to lend a hand or give advice about woodworking jobs.”

Police inquiries into Wednesday’s collision are ongoing.
