Caution: Men calling at properties in Poyntzpass and Gilford enquiring about motorhomes for sale

Poyntzpass

Police have urged residents to be cautious following a number of reports about men, travelling in a van, cold calling at homes in Poyntzpass and Gilford.

There have been a number of reports in recent weeks from people who have been approached by unsolicited callers offering different services and enquiring about items for sale.

In a number of reports from the Poyntzpass and Gilford areas residents described their rural homes being approached by men, travelling in a van, who enquired if their motorhome or caravan was for sale.

In some of the instances the motorhome would not have been visible from the road and in all of the cases there was no indication one was for sale at the address.

Chief Inspector Adam Corner said: “Not all cold callers are rogue traders or fraudsters however those intent on committing crime, will employ any tactic to engage you and lower your guard.

“If someone calls to your home offering a service you have not sought out or making enquiries about property you may have for sale, trust your gut – if you feel that something isn’t quite right, it usually isn’t. Don’t permit them into your home and report any activity that raises your suspicions to police immediately.

“I must stress the importance of sharing these types of interactions and behaviours with us.

“The sooner this information is reported to us, even if it is on behalf of others, the better our chances are of catching a potential criminal. This is also a good way to alert us so we can investigate further – to help us understand potential patterns, deter criminals and reduce crimes of this nature in your area.”
