Calls for an end to anti-social behaviour at derelict Newry building

A Newry councillor has issued a stark warning over ongoing anti-social behaviour at a derelict building on the city’s Warrenpoint Road.

Sinn Féin representative Valerie Harte said she has received “numerous reports” in recent weeks about groups of young people gathering at the old Orana House site, engaging in what she described as “dangerous activity” and causing a nuisance to nearby residents.

The abandoned building sits adjacent to St Mary’s Cemetery, a site of “deep importance” to many local families — and Cllr Harte said mourners have been forced to endure unacceptable levels of disruption.

“People visiting the graves of loved ones should not have to endure noise, nuisance, or disrespect,” she said.

“This area must be treated with the dignity and the respect it deserves — especially given its proximity to a place of rest.”

Cllr Harte confirmed that the incidents have been reported to police, and that Sinn Féin is liaising with the relevant authorities in an effort to curb the behaviour.

She added: “I urge parents and community leaders to talk to young people about the seriousness of this behaviour. Orana House is unsafe, derelict and completely inappropriate as a gathering spot.

“We all have a role to play in protecting our young people and ensuring the community — especially those visiting loved ones at St Mary’s — can do so in peace and safety.”
