Both a local councillor and police have issued warnings to the public after possible drug paraphernalia was found in an area of housing in Keady.
Posting an image of what appeared to be a discarded needle on Wednesday, 23 April, SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon urged parents to be “extra cautious” when walking with children and pets.
He said: “Today I received reports of drug needles being found in a housing area around Keady. Please be extra cautious — especially when walking with children and pets.”
The councillor provided some advice on what to do if you do find needles in public, adding: “Do not touch them. Report the location immediately. Educate your family about staying safe and not picking up unknown objects.”
However, Councillor O’Hanlon remained tight-lipped on the exact location of the discovery.
He said: “I’m deliberately not mentioning the housing area this was found in. The irresponsible idiot who left this lying on the street has a lot to answer for. Thankfully, a responsible person noticed it and got in touch before some child out playing picked this up.”
The police have now also issued their own warning regarding discarded drug paraphernalia and anti-social behaviour.
A spokesperson for the police said: “Imagine if a child picked up this used drug paraphernalia. The consequences aren’t worth thinking about.
“We are aware of ongoing anti-social behaviour within Keady town.
“Our thanks to those who have spoken to us and made us aware of such items or hotspots used by drug users.
“We are working hard with the community to tackle the issue and will continue to use both uniformed and plain-clothes patrols at all times of the day.
“If you have any information that may assist police, please contact us on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
