Man in 40s killed after collision with stray horse close to border with Co Armagh

A man in his 40s has died after a collision with a stray horse in County Monaghan.

The incident happened on Saturday night, at Creevy, close to the border with County Armagh.

The man had been a front seat passenger in the car which struck the horse on the northbound lane of the N2 close to Carrickmacross.

Emergency services, who were notified shortly after 9pm, attended and the road was closed.

The front seat passenger died at the scene and the horse was also killed as a result of the collision.

The driver and another male occupant of the car, according to Garda, were assessed at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

The N2 remained closed on Sunday morning as investigators examined the scene to ascertain exactly what happened.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Carrickmacross have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
