The young child that was found dead in a house in Dungannon has been named locally as Tavia Michaela.
The East Timorese toddler, who was due to turn two this month, was discovered in the Windmill Court area of the Co. Tyrone town on Sunday (October 13).
A man and two women, all aged in their 20s, remain in custody, with the death currently being treated as suspicious.
The incident has left the community devastated, with a number of people taking to social media to voice their sympathies.
Deborah Erskine, DUP MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, said: “This is a deeply tragic incident and will cause widespread shock within Dungannon and further afield.
“The death of a child is particularly shocking and my thoughts are with all those who are suffering today as a result.
“It is important that the full facts surrounding this case are established and the investigation that is underway can conclude as quickly as possible.”
She added: “I would ask that the community do not speculate and allow the Police to conduct their investigation.”
SDLP councillor Karol McQuade said: “For a child to lose its life is an absolute tragedy and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this death. It is hard to find the words when it comes to a situation like this.
“Police are investigating and I would urge the public to give them the time and space they need to carry out their investigation. The most important thing now is establishing what happened here and this is an incredibly sensitive situation.”
Roy Setiawan, from Timorese Association Inclusive Support NI, told UTV: “This is really sad and a shock to our community.
“I hope we all pray for the soul of the baby girl that passed away, so her soul can rest in peace.”
