Major demolition and extension plans to be unveiled for Crossmaglen school

The works relate to St Patrick’s Primary and Irish Medium Unit Gaelscoil Phadraig Naofa and would, if approved, transform this popular school

St Patrick's Primary School, Crossmaglen

St Patrick’s Primary  in Crossmaglen looks set to be transformed with major proposals for the school to be unveiled to the public next month.

Part of the school at Carran Road will be demolished if a future planning application proves successful.

Such is the extent of the development that a pre-application community consultation notice has been submitted to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

The intention is to reconfigure the school – which was opened in 1959 – and build an extension to include eight new classrooms.

The works relate to St Patrick’s Primary School and Irish Medium Unit Gaelscoil Phadraig Naofa.

The scheme would see the provision of a school boasting a total of 17 classrooms offering floorspace in excess of 18,000 sq ft.xyen

There would also be alterations and refurbishment works to the existing school building, as well as the repositioning
and retention of a single mobile unit consisting of two classrooms.

Additional mobile classrooms would be positioned on site on a temporary basis to accommodate ongoing activities during the construction phases.

External works, meanwhile, include play areas, car parking, landscaping and access.

Full details will be made available shortly in a number of ways.

At that time, the public will have the chance to have their say and feedback will be used to shape firm proposals before an application for full planning approval is made.

A public consultation event will be held in the school on August 8, from 3pm until 7pm.

Members of the design team will be available to talk through details of the proposed development and respond to questions.

There will also be an ‘online information exhibit’ – available to view at www.hamiltonarchitects.co.uk – from August 8 to 15.

And a physical information display will be placed in the school from September 4 to 15. Again, a comment box facility will allow people to express their views on what is proposed.

Neighbours living close to the new school will also be notified in advance.
