New plans could see prior approved Whitecross housing scheme reduced in size

Approval was granted for 20 homes in 2011, but now the plan is to build 13, which 'better reflects the established pattern of development' in the area

Plans that were granted for the development of 20 houses in Whitecross could now be overridden by a new application for a smaller scheme, more in-keeping with development in the area.

The previous application was originally granted by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council back in 2011, with renewal of the application then also granted in 2018 for the construction of 20 homes.

Both requests were submitted in the name of Peadar O’Hagan, of O’Hagan Construction Ltd, and related to “waste land” located between 17 and 27 Kingsmill Road.

The homes were never built and permission is now being sought for a smaller development scheme of 13 homes, described as “better reflecting the established pattern of development in Whitecross”.

Under new proposals the development would comprise six semi-detached houses and seven detached houses, with a treatment plant and associated works.

The six semi-detached properties would each contain three bedrooms with the seven detached homes extending to four bedrooms.

All of the homes will be two-storey with 1.8m timber fencing to rear gardens with “pin-kerb demarcation” to front boundaries.

A total of 38 parking spaces would also be provided for residents of the properties.

The site is located on the southern side of Kingsmill Road with built development to the north with further housing and a petrol filling station/convenience store to the west.

It’s described as “waste land” comprising mostly overgrown vegetation and rough grass. An old outbuilding at the location will be used as a site office during construction but will ultimately be demolished to facilitate the proposed development.

The application will be advertised shortly.
