The mother and auntie of a brave young Benburb cancer fighter have been given the go-ahead to develop an all inclusive ‘Fairy Trail’ founded in the names of some very special children.
Michelle Rooney – mother of five-year-old Frankie – together with her sister Paula has for three years been engaged in constant fundraising efforts to help provide the best level of care to her son.
Three years ago Frankie was diagnosed with leukaemia after Michelle “trusted her gut” when noticing a strange bruise on his neck, despite not having injured himself.
During the years that Frankie has been undergoing treatment, Michelle has leant heavily on the support of her community and of several Northern Irish charities – like Angel Wishes – who have done all they can to help.

Now, just seven months away from Frankie finally “ringing the bell” signalling his all clear, Michelle wants to “give back” as a heartfelt thank you to her community.
Said Michelle: “For nearly three years, my brave little boy Frankie has been fighting cancer with strength and courage beyond his years. In just seven months, he will ring the bell — a moment I have held in my heart for a long time.
“Through it all, the community has stood beside us with love, kindness, and support. I always said that one day, when the time was right, I would give something back. That time is now. And what better way to give back than through our precious children.”
To that end, Michelle and Paula have been working behind the scenes to create a Fairy Trial for children in the grounds of Benburb Priory.
The space, she says will be “close to our hearts” and will be designed to “support the emotional wellbeing of all children, young people, and families. A place where imagination, healing, and nature meet.”
Continued Michelle: “The trail will be completely free of charge, open to all, and we hope it brings smiles, comfort, and a little bit of magic for years to come.
“This is for every family who needs a moment of light. Everyone has their own important story to tell.
“Most importantly, this trail is for every child. The path we’ve chosen is wheelchair accessible, and we are designing it with love and care for children and young adults with additional needs.
“We want everyone to feel welcome, included, and free to explore the magic — no matter their journey.”
The trial will be founded in the names of Frankie, his sister Minnie, cousins Izzy Cassells and Conan McCann, who Michelle says each have their “own story, strength and light” and who have “walked every step of this journey” with Frankie.
Concluded Michelle: “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for continuing to be apart of our journey and we can’t wait to keep you updated on our fairy trail progress. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks for our open day.”
