Markethill Road closed as firefighters tackle burning lorry

An eyewitness said police and two fire appliances are at the scene

Emergency services are at the scene of a lorry on fire on the Markethill Road.

It is understood the cab caught on fire but the driver has been able to escape the vehicle safely.

A trailer which had been attached and containing machinery has been safely detached.

It happened on the stretch of road between Collone Young Farmers’ Hall and Dougans Tyres.

An eyewitness reported seeing police and two fire appliances at the scene.

He said the road had been closed in both directions and traffic was being diverted via Redrock.

Initial accounts had indicated there had been a collision but it has since been confirmed this was not the case.

The cause of the blaze is not known and there have been no reports of any injuries.
