DUP Councillors are asking ABC council to start now to look at ways of commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day next year.
VE Day – in May – marks the end of the Second World War in Europe, when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces after six years of conflict.
Victory Europe Day falls on May 8 and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council is being asked to act imminently to plan how the occasion might be marked within the borough.
Last year, a series of events, including services and lighting of beacons, were staged across the borough to mark the 80th anniversary of D Day.
A notice of motion is to be brought to the December monthly meeting of council tonight (Monday), seeking support to establish a group to consider the matter.
Brought by Alderman Stephen Moutray, and seconded by Councillor Lavelle McIlwrath, it asks that councillors agree to “establish a task and finish working group to plan and prepare to mark the momentous VE Day 80th Anniversary on 8th May 2025”.
And it seeks support thus: “As a council we recognise the significant sacrifice of millions of Allied troops who gave their lives in the cause of freedom and we commit to ensuring their achievements are recognised in an appropriate way.
“We further propose that council follow the official VE Day 80 programme as far and practically possible and that officers would bring a report to the working group with associated costings for consideration.”
The motion will be debated and voted on this evening.
