An Armagh man has spoken of his anger and disgust after watching a man – part of a group of up 10 drinking on the Mall – urinate openly on the globe sculpture in full view of passersby.

The man was walking his dog at the time of the incident.

The Mall, he said, had been packed at the time.

People of all ages – families enjoying the August Bank Holiday – had gathered to make the most of the summer sunshine.

But the age old problem of public drinking in this popular public park was never too far away.

The man said he contacted the police – who had previously stepped up patrols in the area last year after similar reports – but says it made no difference.

The irate resident, who did not wish to be named, explained: “Unfortunately there was a group of around 10 – not kids, but middle-aged men – sitting at the globe at the top end of the Mall in plain view, drinking bottles of cider and taking drugs.

“And as I walked past I witnessed one male urinating all over the globe, which kids go up to and look inside.

“It angered me that much I phoned the PSNI switch board around 3.15pm and told them what I witnessed.

“They said they would send a unit round. I left the Mall at 5pm.

“The same group were still there doing the same thing, so over an hour and a half had passed and still no police came by. It is unbelievable that they still let this happen.”
