Armagh is mourning the loss of a popular member of the Westender group who “always had a smile on her face and laugh in her belly”.
The sudden passing of deeply valued member, Nancy McGee has shocked and saddened those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Nancy – who hailed from Armagh – passed away at home on June 1.
Paying tribute, the West Armagh Consortium – who play home to the Westenders – said they were “heartbroken” to learn of her death.
Westenders is a senior citizen group that like An Post Fanách was borne out of an older people forum and as an organisation has grown from strength to strength.
Their motto is ‘Aging is inevitable.. getting old is optional’ and they definitely live up to that maxim.
West Armagh Consortium said that Nancy’s death had “sent shockwaves” through the Westender group.
“Nancy was a much loved member who was always willing to help in the kitchen with a smile on her face and a laugh in her belly.”
Sharing several images of Nancy in all her glory with the group, they said: “We thought we would share photos today of Nancy at our ‘Cook it’ programme where we at West Armagh Consortium got to know her best.
“We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to The Traynor and McGee family at this time and especially with her side kick Bernie we wouldn’t see one without the other xx. Rest in peace Nancy you where one in a million x.”
Continued another member: “We are all heartbroken and in shock at the Westenders. Nancy was a lady and will be sorely missed, but never forgotten, we extend our deepest sympathy to her family and friends at this sad time and also to her best friend Bernie another one of our Westenders family, you are all in our thoughts and prayers.”
Nancy’s nail technician – Bee-autiful by Bernie – added: “I’m heartbroken. Nancy has been a client from the start, and she was an absolute lady.
“She was so thoughtful and kind, always spoiling Olivia and asking about her every visit. Never forgetting a birthday or occasion. A creature of habit getting the same colour each time which we renamed ‘the Nancy colour’.
“Most of our chats were about what’s for dinner, baking, keeping up to date with her social life or talking about her family who were her world. Rest easy Nancy. I’ll miss you and our chats.”
A death notice described Nancy as beloved Mother to Lisa, Patrick, Paul, Cara and daughter of the late Patsy and Rose.
Funeral arrangements are to be confirmed.
