An Armagh pensioner who says he came “face-to-face” with would-be thieves in broad daylight, scuppering their plans, has advised residents to be aware that “some rattlesnakes” may take advantage of other people’s sadness.
The fearless retiree – who wished to remain anonymous – said he was working on a plot of land he owns in the Desart Lane area of the city on Friday (August 14) when he heard voices nearby.
He advised there were sadly a number of wakes taking place in the area that day and, thus, he initially paid little attention to the conversation he was overhearing.
However, he says he then caught two opportunistic individuals with Southern accents “red-handed” on his land.
The men, who he assumes were there to steal tools or machinery kept on the site, appeared as though they may threaten to “face him” before they scarpered “flying over” a seven foot gate to get away.
Said the man: “They took a flying leap at the gate which is about 7ft in height. The two of them flew through the air and half wrecked the gate in the process. Then they ran about ten yards to their car. I was lucky enough to grab their registration before they took off.”
He claims the pair got into a black Audi hatchback and sped off. He immediately rang the police and provided the registration and details.
During his wait for the police – who he praises as being “extremely good” – to arrive on scene the resident was fortunate to have encountered three women and one “big strapping gentleman” who he says have “restored my faith in humanity”.
He wished to take the opportunity to thank all four – who also witnesses the event – for their kindness and for staying with him while waiting for police.
Luckily, the alleged thieves were unable to take anything on this occasion but the man said he felt compelled to warn others in the area to be on high alert.
He said: “There are some rattlesnakes out there that will take full advantage of other people’s sadness. People were distracted that day with the wakes and everything going on. I was fortunate to have been there when I was.”
Police confirmed they are appealing for information following a report of an attempted burglary in Armagh on Friday August 14.
Shortly after 8pm, it was reported that two men had been seen trespassing on land in the Desart Lane area.
Once disturbed by the landowner, the men made off, causing damage to a fence.
Anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in the area or with CCTV or other footage that could assist with enquiries, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1535 14/08/26.
