The late Malachy McGeeney

The recent death of our club vice-President Malachy McGeeney has robbed the club and indeed the wider G.A.A. community of a man who dedicated his whole life to the promotion of the ideals of An Cumann Luthchleas Gael. In a wide variety of capacities from player, educator and administrator Malachy brought to bear his dedication, drive and excellent administrative abilities to develop and promote the ideals of the association in a positive and progressive way. By nature a gentleman he used his people skills effectively to get individuals and organisations on board to unite and achieve the desired objective. Always in the front rank Malachy led by example never asking anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. His work first with the South Board, Youth Board and Cumann na mBunscol saw him give a lifetime of service to the entire G.A.A. community in his native county.

As a player Malachy first drew notice to himself when at sixteen years of age he played a starring role with the Armagh minor team which won its way to the All-Ireland final in 1957. It was to be one of Malachy’s greatest disappointments in his playing career that a broken wrist in training saw him miss out his big day in Croke Park where Armagh lost out to Meath in the decider. At that tender age Malachy was already featuring in the senior ranks of his local Thomas Williams’s side and he went on to give much great service as an effective scoring forward to that club and its successor St Patrick’s. Probably the highlight of his club career, which many of the older inhabitants of the area will recall, was the 1964 junior championship final where he scored 6 of the team’s 8 points to being the club their first ever county championship trophy. Despite being in poor health he was determined to attend the recent golden jubilee celebration of that success which took place last November and there was no prouder man than Malachy when he went up to receive his medal that night. His playing career coincided with the rise of the club in the ranks of Armagh football so that by 1968 the team were competing in the first division of league football.

Malachy’s contribution to the G.A.A. in Cullyhanna was not alone on the playing field. Even in his playing days he was active in the ranks of the various club committees and again brought great drive and efficiency to whatever role he was entrusted with. He was particularly anxious to promote underage football and spent much time and effort in helping with the club minor and U-16 football teams of the day. Despite moving to live nearer his work in Cloughreagh the Cullyhanna club remained very dear to him. He seldom if ever missed a club AGM, attended as many matches as possible and kept well up to date with all the activities of the club both on and off the field. He was much gratified to see the strides the club has made over the last decades, first in acquiring their own playing field and then the subsequent developments that have followed. Deepest sympathy and condolences are extended to his wife Mona, children Ciarán and Maria, grandchildren Caolán and Eabha, sister June, nephew and club member Gary McGeeney and wide circle of friends.

Sympathy

Our sincerest condolences to the family of the late Maureen McShane, grandmother of our club member Martin Rooney. We also wish to extend our sympathy to the Durnin family, Cargie Rd, on the death of Rita’s mother, Mary Byrne from Knockbridge. May they Rest in Peace.

Scór

As our victorious Ulster title winning dramatists prepare for the all Ireland final on Saturday 14th February, we encourage the entire club to support them as much as possible. We will be holding a family quiz on Friday 30th January at 8 30pm to support them in their fundraising for the big event. There will be lots of prizes available and a great night’s craic is in store for all. Everybody very welcome!

We will be holding another fashion extravaganza in the club on Friday 6th March so please mark this date in your diaries.

She is hugely appreciated of all the support she receives for her dancing and we in St Patrick’s Cullyhanna wish her every success for the future.

SEAN MC COOE- Armagh Harps Hall of Fame Winner 2014

Sean McCooe was born and raised in Portadown and in the mid- 1960’s met a young lady from Banbrook Hill in Armagh, Josie Gibney. The relationship flourished and in 1968 Sean and Josie married and have resided on Banbrook Hill ever since.

As this relationship continued to flourish, Sean entered another long term relationship – this time with Armagh Harps.

Sean had only a limited interest in football before he came to Armagh and had certainly not been involved in any official capacity with any club. In 1969, a time synonymous with the beginning of “The Troubles”, Sean had become friendly with Eddie Rafferty (RIP), a Harps stalwart. He accompanied Eddie to Harps’ games and it was inevitable with Sean’s wit and love of banter that he would quickly became “one of the lads”, thoroughly enjoying the craic associated with the matches. It was from this humble beginning that Sean’s love affair with Armagh Harps began!

Eddie encouraged Sean to attend the 1970 AGM. GAA Clubs were experiencing difficult times and volunteers were hard to find. Sean “put his hand up” and has not been seen missing in “putting his hand up” since. Sean joined the Committee and it quickly been apparent that he had a particular aptitude for financial matters.

Sean quickly asserted himself within the Club and, accompanied by another close friend Peter Lynch (RIP) soon became the face at the gate. Woe betide anyone who attempted to enter Abbey Park without paying!! Sean ensured that monies collected were immediately transferred to the Treasurer, guaranteeing that it was available to be put to good use. Sean and Peter’s honesty and integrity were recognised outside the Club too and both soon were recruited by both the Armagh County Board and the Ulster Council to steward at their games where they were always known as the “Harps boys”.

Sean officiated in Abbey Park at many Armagh and Ulster Club Championship games and was the conduit between the Club and County /Ulster Council. Here he used his persuasive skills in ensuring the Club was never short changed in receipt of gate money! Senior Club officials across the decades including Phil McGinn (RIP), Don Richards, Patsy Nugent and Kieran Grimley welcomed Sean coming with his pot of gold!

Through Sean’s knowledge of the gate receipts process he recognised that the Club was owed money and his persistence resulted in Joe Canning, the then County Treasurer, writing a substantial cheque to Na Claírsigh!

Sean also represented the Club on the then mid-Board and served for two years as Treasurer. Sean’s honesty and integrity we never in question and this coupled with his willingness to assist resulted him being recruited by the Ulster Council to officiate at Ulster Championship inter-county games. Sean has many a story to tell about these days but he’s particularly very proud to recall that he was doing these duties as a “Harpsman” and that he would inform his seniors that “he did things the Harps way and would always do things that were right for the Harps”. By his involvement in these duties over the years he succeeded in promoting the good name of Armagh Harps.

From his early days on the Committee the importance of payment of membership became apparent to Sean, both from the status of being a member of the Association and Club and from its fundraising potential. He actively pursued Club men who had lapsed in their payment of membership and then targeted new members. His initiative increased the membership and brought in much needed funds. During the ‘80’s membership had remained at £1 per annum for a number of years but Sean received support in increasing the yearly cost to £10. Yes a 1000% increase…and he got away with it! Sean took on his role on the Membership front with aplomb and no opportunity to approach someone for their membership fees passed him by. Many a punter when collecting a small bet in the bookies would have felt their sleeve being tugged and received a gentle reminder that membership was due!

Sean was also a key member of the very successful Lotto team- an organiser and seller. His average personal weekly intake over a thirty year period was around £60 to £70. A huge contribution! Sean has his regular players including the friends he met through the Bingo.

Bingo was another key activity Sean was involved in throughout his active years. Sean recognised that this was another fundraising opportunity for the club and was instrumental in running weekly sessions. Sean’s call for “eyes down” was greatly welcomed and he along with his good friends Bobby Gamble and Dessie Boylan (RIP) enjoyed many nights at this pursuit. As numbers fell in the “noughties” Sean appreciated that bingo was actually costing the Club money but his persuasive arguments to continue with it – given that it provided a much needed service to the community – were accepted by the Committee, helping Armagh Harps continue as an integral part of the community.

Like all respected volunteers Sean was flexible and willing to help in other areas. Sean was an active volunteer in the Abbey Park Field Committee for over thirty years undertaking a variety of tasks. Sean and Oliver Gordon spent endless hours during the refurbishment of Abbey Park working on the drainage system. This involved digging up the complete pitch and piping it! Their endeavours certainly paid off as Abbey Park remains playable in all weathers and is still regarded as one of the best in Ulster!

Sean worked closely with Patsy McCoy in ensuring the pitch was properly prepared for games. He also was a dab hand at painting, ensuring the changing facilities and old Committee Room were fit for purpose. The trees around the walkways, which provide a lovely ambiance in Abbey Park, can also be attributed to Sean.

His association with the Club did not stop with his direct involvement. Sean and Josie’s four sons Sean, Martin, Tony and Paul all represented the Club at various levels. Pride of place in Sean’s house is a photo of Martin receiving Player of the Year.

Of course in his spare time Sean was an avid Harps and Armagh supporter and would always be seen (and heard) at games over the length and breadth of the country, in the company of legends Jack Bratton (RIP), Dessie Boylan (RIP), Eddie Rafferty (RIP) and Paddy McAneney(RIP).

Sean McCooe is a typical active member of a GAA Club. He has devoted in excess of forty years to the Club. He’s a proud Harps’ man and Armagh Harps are proud to call him one of our own. Sean McCooe is a very deserving recipient of the Club’s most prized individual honour – Armagh Harps Hall Of Fame 2014.
