Man in 20s arrested over hit and run which claimed life of Tyrone schoolboy Ronan

A man in his 20s has been arrested after a hit and run collision which claimed the life of a nine-year-old Co Tyrone schoolboy.

Ronan Wilson was struck by a vehicle in Bundoran after 9pm on Saturday night.

Tragically, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the efforts of emergency services.

A son of Dean and Emma Wilson, the child was a pupil of St Mary’s Primary, Dunamore, and an U10 player with Kildress Wolfe Tones, a club with which his older brother and sister play.

The death has sent shockwaves across the community.

Gardai had launched an investigation and appealed for the driver to come forward.

Tonight, (Sunday), they confirmed a man had been arrested.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: “A man aged in his 20s has been arrested for an alleged offence under the Road Traffic Act in relation to a fatal road traffic collision which occurred in Bundoran, Co Donegal, yesterday evening, Saturday, September 23, 2023.

“The male is currently detained at a Garda Station in Donegal under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“Gardaí have seized a vehicle in connection with the investigation which will undergo technical examination.

“Gardaí are continuing to appeal to anyone with information or who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and who were travelling in the area of Atlantic Way, Bundoran, yesterday evening between 8.45pm and 9.45pm, is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
