City of Armagh see off Carrickfergus in Forster Cup

Saturday saw Armagh entertain Carrickfergus in the Second Round of the Forster Cup.

This encounter promised to be a very highly contested game following the debacle two years ago when both sides had played in Carrickfergus in the same tournament.

The two sides were of differing composition player-wise in that the Carrickfergus team were mainly well ‘seasoned’ players whereas the Armagh side was comprised from mostly young students.

The came took on the form of Carrickfergus taking control with the experience of the more hardened players showing. Armagh, fought back and by full-time they had evened the score to 19-19.

By this time the senior Towns Cup game Armagh v Omagh had finished and the majority of the club supporters drifted on to the Armagh v Carrickfergus touch line.

This vocal support appeared to inspire the Armagh side who went from an unsure bunch of player to become dominant with all the confidence of a Premier side!

Fitness also began to be a factor as the home side began to swing the ball about resulting in two tries in quick succession!

After the two ten minutes periods of extra time the home team had notched up twenty additional points to give them a well deserved 39-19 victory. It has to be said that Trevor Girvan’s young team certainly shone for Armagh!
