Pupils of Clare Primary School near Tandragee have been engaging with civil engineers to apply their new-found expertise into a theoretical fixing of a storm damaged bridge.
The pupils in Mrs Buckley’s class have recently been receiving a series of lessons about bridges as part of their classroom studies.
Part of this sequence of lessons involved a visit to school by a team of civil engineers from local company ‘ARUP’ led by Mr. Richard Reid.
The culmination of their studies has allowed the children to focus their learnings towards the recently damaged Clare Bridge.
This fine example of Georgian construction – which is almost as famous as Clare crossroads – was damaged during Storm Éowyn.
So it was with great interest that the class visited their local landmark to see first hand some design principles and assess the damage.
The children enjoyed participating in a range of fun activities designed to illustrate key civil engineering principles relating to forces.
The follow up conversations back in school generated some interesting theories from excited young people, some of whom no doubt will go on to have a career in this essential sector of Northern Ireland life.
