Organised crime gangs ‘actively’ targeting ‘luxury’ cars in South Armagh

Organised crime gangs are actively targeting high-range SUVs and luxury vehicles in the South Armagh area, says one Newry and Armagh MLA.

Warning her constituency of the issue Sinn Féin MLA Aoife Finnegan said the increase in the theft of high-range SUV and luxury vehicles by organised crime gangs is a “growing concern” in South Armagh.

She added: “Organised crime gangs are actively targeting high-range SUVs and luxury vehicles, including Range Rovers, Jeeps, and Mercedes, often using advanced ‘keyless’ technology to steal them in seconds.

“The stolen vehicles are often stripped for parts in or shipped abroad, with some gangs having international connections. Some are used to commit further crimes.”

Ms Finnegan said the gangs involved are often “well-funded” and part of “wider criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and other serious offences”.

“The financial hurt caused by to so many is compounded by the distress and disruption caused to their lives,” she continued. “We will continue to liaise directly with the police and all agencies to work to strengthen safety and support our communities across the area.

“I would also urge people to be mindful and look out for their neighbours and if they see anything suspicious to contact police.”

Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Policing & Community Safety Partnerships (PCSP) often provide crime prevention schemes for local residents whereby you can benefit from home safety equipment and advice for improving the safety of neighbourhoods and communities.

Many of their schemes can assist with helping to prevent thefts of this nature.
