A man was arrested in south Armagh following the report of a person acting suspiciously outside a house.

The 25-year-old was apprehended on the Old Road area of Camlough on Sunday night.

Sergeant O’Neill said: “We received a report of a man behaving in a suspicious manner in the area on Sunday at around 11.20pm.

“The occupant reported hearing a vehicle struggling to start and a short time later saw a man, wearing a red coat, at the door of the house.

“Officers attended and arrested a man, matching the description given.

“The 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and a number of driving-related offences. He remains in custody at this time assisting with our enquiries.”

A further report was received this morning (29 June) of a car being broken into on the Old Road.

Sergeant O’Neill continued: “It’s believed the BMW was broken into at some stage overnight. The car’s automatic gear stick has been removed.”

Slieve Gullion area Councillor Oonagh Magennis has urged residents in the area to be vigilant.

“Homes on the Old Road Camlough locality were broken into last night. It is reported that one of the thieves has been apprehended by police after being interrupted by a homeowner,” said the Sinn Fein representative.

“I would urge residents to continue to be vigilant and ensure that their properties are kept secure at all times.”

Sergeant O’Neill continued: “I am appealing to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 446 of 29/06/20.”
