Elderly woman dies following collision in Cullyhanna

A pensioner has died following a collision between a car and a pedestrian in Cullyhanna on Monday morning.

The woman died at the scene of the collision on the Tullynavall Road.

The Air Ambulance attended the incident alongside paramedics, but the NI Ambulance Service confirmed that no one was taken from the scene.

PSNI Inspector Moore said: “Shortly before 9.30am, officers along with colleagues from other emergency services attended, however sadly the woman, aged in her 70s died at the scene.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with CCTV or other footage that can help with enquiries to contact police on 101 quoting reference 301 12/0525.”

A spokesperson for the NI Ambulance Service (NIAS) said: “NIAS received a 999 call at 9:25am on Monday, May 12, following reports of an incident on the Tullynavall Road area, Cullyhanna.

“NIAS dispatched one Emergency Ambulance and the Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board were also tasked to the incident.

“No one was taken from the scene.”

A police spokesperson said: “The Tullynavall Road in Cullyhanna is currently closed due to a road traffic collision.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route for their journey at this time.”

The Tullynavall Road has now re-opened.

Newry and Armagh MLA Aoife Finnegan has expressed her condolences to the woman’s family and wider community impacted by this tragedy.

The Sinn Féin MLA said: “The community has been shocked and saddened by the news of the tragic death of this woman.”

Her colleague local Councillor Martin Hearty echoing his colleagues sentiments said: “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of the lady who has lost her life in this tragic accident.”
