The Camlough community has been left deeply saddened following the passing of Jim Hughes, the much-respected proprietor of Hughes Food Hall.
Mr Hughes passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 11, surrounded by his loving family.
A cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother, Jim was the beloved husband of Noreen and devoted father to Sinéad, Gráinne, Bronagh, Micheál, Gerard, Ciarán and James. He was also a much-loved granda to his many grandchildren and brother to Rona, Valerie, Rosie, Josephine, Eugene, Martin and Gervase, and the late Des, Paul, Phyllis and Laura.
Jim was widely known across South Armagh as a true gentleman and pillar of the community, who, through his vision, hard work and dedication, helped shape the heart of Camlough village.
He founded Hughes Food Hall, which has gone on to develop over the years and has beed the bedrock on which the village has grown over the years.
Tributes have poured in from far and wide since news of his passing; a reflection of the man he was and the respect so many had for him.
“Jim was a true legend who brought new energy and vibrant life to the village of Camlough,” one tribute read. “He will be deeply missed by many.”
Another described him as “a great businessman and a real gentleman,” while others fondly remembered him as “a gentle giant,” “the heart of the village,” and “a man who always had a smile and a hello for everyone he encountered.”
Another said: “Jim was a gentleman who worked tirelessly throughout his life building and retailing for future generations.”
Former Councillor for the area, Roisin Mulgrew, also paid her respects, saying: “I remember Jim and Noreen starting that shop – decent, hardworking people and so respected within our community. May Jim rest in peace, and my thoughts and prayers are with his lovely wife and family at this sad time.”
Others spoke of his generosity and community spirit: “Jim was a gentleman who did so much for Camlough. His kindness will never be forgotten. His memory will live on in his children, grandchildren and the many businesses he successfully established.”
Jim was much more than a businessman, he was a friend to all – but most of all, he was a proud family man.
And it was his children who announced his passing earlier today.
They wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Jim Hughes. Jim passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and children. Rest in peace, Daddy.”
Jim’s remains will repose at his home, 6 Main Street, Camlough, on Sunday and Monday from 11am to 10pm.
His funeral will leave his home on Tuesday at 11am for 12 noon Requiem Mass in St Malachy’s Church, Carrickcruppen, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
Jim will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his heartbroken wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, sons- and daughters-in-law, and his wide circle of family and friends.
May he Rest in Peace.
