30mph speed limit could be extended to cover entrance to Richhill church

'Officials will undertake a review of the existing speed limit on this stretch of Corcreevy Road to ensure they are in line with our policy document and considered to be appropriate along with the existing warning signs and road markings at this location'

A 30mph speed limit in Richhill could be extended to cover an access point to one of the village’s main churches.

The speed limit comes into effect on the Corcreevy Road, leading into Richhill from the Portadown Road, just metres beyond the entrance to Richhill Presbyterian church.

That means the national speed limit currently applies to the section of road at the church’s only entrance and exit.

DUP MLA for Newry and Armagh, William Irwin recently asked the Infrastructure Minister if the speed limit could be extended to cover the access point to the church.

In reply, Minister Liz Kimmins said generally: “Road safety is a high priority for my Department, and we are committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and to address the needs of all road users.

“When considering the appropriate speed limit for a road, the Department’s policy is used to ensure speed limits are consistent and motorists are presented with the same speed limit on similar roads.

“This takes into account factors such as the characteristic of the road, the speed of existing traffic, the degree of frontage development, and road traffic collision data, which is continuously monitored using data provided by the PSNI.”

In regards to Corcreevy Road, the Minister added: “Officials will undertake a review of the existing speed limit on this stretch of Corcreevy Road to ensure they are in line with our policy document and considered to be appropriate along with the existing warning signs and road markings at this location.”
