Newry Courthouse

A woman has admitted a string of drugs and weapons offences as well as dangerous driving which left a man seriously injured in a crash on the Newry Road near Mayobridge.

Deanna Hughes (32), of Hilltown Road, Mayobridge appeared before His Honour Judge Paul Ramsey KC at Newry Crown Court on Friday, where she was re‑arraigned on three separate indictment bills and pleaded guilty to all charges she faced. A number of  counts were left on the books and will not be proceeded with.

Judge Ramsey ordered pre‑sentence reports and adjourned the case for sentencing in December.

On the first indictment, Hughes admitted being involved in the supply of Class A, B and C drugs, including cocaine, cannabis, Magic Mushrooms and possessing various prescription‑type tablets and steroids with intent to supply.

The charges also include possessing criminal property – namely whiskey – and having an illegal stun gun (Taser‑type device) without authority.

Some linked counts, including further alleged criminal property (designer watches and cash) and additional supply charges involving other types of tablets, were left on the books following her guilty pleas.

On a second bill, Hughes pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving on the Newry Road at Mayobridge near Derrylecka Row on March 18, 2023.

She also admitted: Driving while unfit through drink or drugs; Driving with no licence; Driving without insurance; and Possessing Class C tablets (Tramadol) on the same date.

On a third indictment, Hughes pleaded guilty to having herbal cannabis with intent to supply on 18 March 2023. A linked simple possession count was left on the books.

Ordering pre‑sentence reports from probation, Judge Ramsey told Hughes it was “very important” that she give a full account of her background and the circumstances of the offences so that the court had all relevant information before passing sentence.

Hughes was remanded on continuing bail, with sentencing listed for December 10.
