Police have followed through on their promise to ticket cars obstructing traffic on roads outside Newry Train Station.
PSNI made the announcement on November 4 that they would be visiting the site to take enforcement as a result of increasing complaints.
Meanwhile, a resident contacted this publication with an image showing a car parked across the pedestrian walkway, completely obstructing the footpath.
“Someone has parked right across the footpath, blocking anyone with a buggy, mobility issues or wanting to walk safely into the train station along the footpath,” she said.
“For people who use the train to commute daily this is frustrating as we are going to end up with additional expenses to park in the carpark if these shenanigans continue!”
Several readers commented on Armagh I‘s previous story to say there was a lack of car parking spaces for commuters.
However, the resident said: “I’ve never not been able to get a space in the car park… I might have to drive to the very back and walk a bit further. But people park on the path inside when there are other spaces available too!”
Police confirmed that they issued a total of ten fixed penalty notices yesterday for road obstructions.
A spokesperson added: “Buses and Lorries (yes lorries there are businesses either side of the bridge requiring lorry access) are continuing to have problems navigating Derrybeg Lane to their respective premises and some of the abuse given towards the translink staff is appauling.
“We recognise this is an issue that could be dealt with by additional infrastructure however a lack of available parking spaces does not give you free reign to park where you like.
“There is a free shuttle bus that runs to Newry Train Station from the Bus Station. We are also aware that people are using the train station as a park and car share facility which is not its intended purpose and I am sure Translink will be looking into that matter but in the meantime we will continue to ticket vehicles who ignore the warnings.
“In any case where a penalty notice can not be issued we will seize vehicles for causing obstructions and the owner can pay to have it released.
“Please do not be abusive to the Translink staff on the ground, they are as frustrated as you are at this problem and it is not their fault. We will be back to monitor this issue so take heed.”
