Hundreds of tributes have been paid to the life of an esteemed footballer, club President and devout Christian who passed away following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Newry man, John Annett passed away peacefully at his home on March 3, 2026. His loss has prompted an outpouring of grief across his local community and beyond.
Regrettably, the five-of-five had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in 2023. He underwent surgery to remove portions of the growth in 2024 and throughout the duration of his arduous journey received constant love, prayer and support from his local community and, in particular, from those within First Rathfriland Presbyterian Church.
For his many years both on and off the field, John had cemented himself within the Northern Irish football scene. He was both a “dear friend” to, and President of, Rathfriland Football Club, who will feel his loss exponentially.
Paying tribute to John, a club spokesperson said: “It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the passing earlier today of our dear friend and Rathfriland Football Club President John Annett.
“The committee, members, players and supporters are heartbroken by John’s passing and we send our sincere condolences to the entire family circle.”
The club also made the decision to postpone their matches against Knockbreda Football Club and Reserves game against Valley Rangers FC on the evening of March 3 in honour of their devoted President.
Countless others have shared their sincere condolences and fond memories of the “gentleman” that was John.
Among them are Dromara Village, Tandragee Rovers, Ambassadors, Valley Rangers and Banbridge Rangers, who all had the pleasure of getting to know him through their shared sport.
In 2024, together with his family, John was able to give back to Brainwaves NI – a charity focused on providing brain tumour research and support – with a mammoth donation of over £17,000 which was generously given by the local community.
Of John’s long-lasting impact, one person said: “The world is so much poorer with John’s passing, an absolute gentleman from a fantastic family. Sending condolences to his wife, kids, mother and brothers. Gone home to be with the Lord, his suffering is over.”
Another added: “I met John through covering events and games at Iveagh Park for the local paper and was immediately struck by what a gentleman he was. Despite his own health battle he was always more concerned how I was, that was the measure of the man.
“I’m proud to call John a friend and am so, so saddened by this news. My condolences to his family and his many friends at the club and beyond.”
A spokesperson for Gospel Goal – an organisation aimed at sharing the Gospel with local footballers – said: “We at Gospel Goal were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Annett, President of our good friends at Rathfriland Football Club.
“Today, we want to express our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his wife, his sons and daughters, his grandchildren, and the entire family circle.
“A football club is more than a team on a pitch, it is a community, a fellowship, and often a family. Leadership given faithfully over many years leaves a legacy that statistics can never measure.
“God’s Word reminds us: ‘The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.’ Proverbs 10:7
“We give thanks for every life that has influenced others for good. And in moments of loss, we cling to the promises of Scripture: ‘The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.’ Psalm 34:18
“To the Annett family, may you know the nearness of the Lord in these difficult days.
“To everyone connected with Rathfriland FC, we share your sorrow and stand with you in prayer.
“‘For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord.’ Romans 14:8. From all of us at Gospel Goal, with sincere Christian sympathy.”
A death notice described John as the dearly loved and devoted Husband of Joanne, loving and adored Father of Joel, Hayley (Jake), Zach (Alana), Ellie and Abbie. Proud Granda of James, Isabella, Oliver, Jude and Ezra. Loving son of Jean and the late Allister. A much loved brother of Murray, David, Eric and Roy.
His funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6, in First Rathfriland Presbyterian Church at 2pm followed by a private family committal in the adjoining burying ground.
