Teenager passes away less than a year after crash which claimed life of friend

Richard Weir

A Warrenpoint teenager has sadly passed away less than a year since his involvement in a road traffic collision which claimed the life of his friend.

Richard Weir was one of five people travelling in a car which crashed on the Hilltown Road in Kilcoo last October.

He suffered catastrophic injuries while the collision claimed the life of 18-year-old Dawid Blenski.

Richard’s family had recently set up a GoFundMe page for their son in a bid to transform his home to allow for it to be adapted to his complex needs for when he returned home from hospital.

Unfortunately that was not to be the case.

As chronicled by his dad in the GoFundMe page, Richard had remained in a vegetative state since November, despite earlier promise and movement.

Richard’s brave battle for life came to an end on Monday morning.

Independent Councillor for Warrenpoint, Mark Gibbons commented: “I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of young Richard Weir this morning.

“Beloved son of Yvonne and Brian and brother of Ethan, Richard passed away with his loving Mother Yvonne by his side.

“This is truly heartbreaking news and my thoughts and prayers are with Yvonne, Brian and Ethan and to the wider Fegan family especially-who have been dear friends of my family for years.

“I know I can speak with confidence on behalf of the people of Warrenpoint and surrounding area when I say that we are truly devastated regarding the passing of Richard and that this community is here to provide any support needed through this difficult time.”
