A security alert in the Ashgrove Park area of Newry has ended after Army technical officers examined a suspicious object and confirmed it was a “viable yet crude” device.
Police were called shortly after 11.10am on Monday following a report that a device had been left in the Ashgrove Road area of the city.
A safety operation was put in place and a number of roads were closed while Ammunition Technical Officers (ATOs) attended the scene.
Inspector Porter said: “Police received a report at around 11.10am that a device had been left in the Ashgrove Road area of Newry. A safety operation was subsequently put in place with a number of roads closed.
“Ammunition Technical Officers attended and determined that the object was a viable yet crude device.
“Residents have now been permitted to return to their homes, and all cordons have now been lifted. We thank the public for their patience.”
Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for information.
