Second man charged with affray and GBH after Down GAA player hospitalised with head injuries

He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates’ Court on January 22

Detectives investigating an assault on two men in the Merchant’s Quay area of Newry in the early hours of Monday have charged a second man.

The 35-year-old has been charged with affray, GBH and AOABH.

Down’s Caolan Mooney suffered head injuries in the attack during the early hours of Monday morning – just hours after beginning the new season with his county side. He remains in a stable condition.

The 26-year-old and another 32-year-old man – Mr Mooney’s brother Patrick – were assaulted.

A 37-year-old man has already been charged with affray and grievous bodily harm arising out of the incident and appeared at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The second man since arrested is due to appear at Newry Magistrates’ Court on January 22.
