A fire has broken out at a derelict building in Newry this evening (Monday).

Police have advised that the Corn Market and Merchants Quay areas of the city are currently closed due to a building on fire.

The public are advised to avoid the area while emergency services attend.

Last Monday – exactly a week ago – a fire broke out at the former Goss’s Garage on Merchants Quay, just a few doors down.

This row of buildings has been a regular fixture for local firefighters in recent times.

The entire row of buildings are due to be redeveloped in the coming years.

Planning permission was granted in 2023 for a mixed use development including 73 apartments, office space and retail units.
