Popular Newry businessman’s death a ‘huge blow for the town’

'Always had a smile on his face and dealt with people in a lovely calm, gentle manner'

Tributes have been paid after the sad passing of a popular Newry businessman, in what has been described as a “huge blow for the town”.

The death was sadly announced yesterday (Wednesday 4) of businessman Séamus ‘Sé’ Gorman.

Séamus was the owner of coffee shops, Café Krèm, located in both Newry and Belfast.

Adored by his staff and colleagues, the popular Newry coffee shop is regarded as a ‘community hub’ for the city and was celebrating 25 years in business this year – a business that Séamus poured his heart and soul into.

A death notice describes Séamus as the beloved husband of Wiola and devoted father to Sam and Leo. He was the much-loved brother of Siobhan, Deirdre, Nuala, Thérèse and John and will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.

A genuinely kind and generous man who was good to everyone, Sé will be sadly missed by his wide circle of friends and all whose lives he touched.

Tributes have poured in online describing Sé as a ‘one of life’s true gentlemen’.

One person said: “Desperately sad news. Was chatting to Sé just yesterday morning. Always had a smile on his face and dealt with people in a lovely calm, gentle manner.

“First and foremost, I’ve no doubt that he’ll be missed enormously by his family and friends. Such a devastating loss for them. Sé’s passing is also a huge blow to our town.

“Cafe Krem is a real community hub for Newry. A warm vibrant place where people are made to feel at home. A truly wonderful place which epitomises all that is good about Newry. Morning coffee on the way to work will no longer be the same.

“Thank you for the memories, Sé. May you rest in peace. Condolences to Sé’s family also on this terrible sudden loss.”

Another added: “Devastated by this news ….One of the kindest, most genuine and naturally warm human beings I had the privilege of knowing and working with.

“I first met Sé over 18 years ago when he brought the wonderful Café Krèm to Queen’s University Belfast.

“What began as a working relationship not only stood the test of time but flourished into a lasting friendship, built on mutual respect, trust and Sé’s unwavering commitment to putting his staff, the students and staff at Queen’s first.

“Sé had that rare ability to make everyone feel valued and special. His warmth, generosity, kindness and genuine interest in people were what made him such a wonderful business partner.

“These qualities were reflected in the wonderful team he built around him and the loyalty and affection of those who worked alongside him.

“I am devastated by his passing, but also feel incredibly privileged to have known and worked with such an exceptional human being. His loss will be deeply felt, but the kindness, friendship and warmth he shared so generously will never be forgotten.

“Rest in peace, Sé. One of life’s true gentlemen. You will be greatly missed.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
