A pensioner has pleaded not guilty to charges of threatening an elected rep under stalking legislation.
Patrick McCartan (67) of Rathgannon, Warrenpoint is alleged to have harassed a Newry, Mourne and Down District councillor seeking re-election in 2023.
A plea was entered at Newry magistrates court on Friday (May 9), though the accused did not appear in person.
A number of witnesses are expected to be called for the contest.
Details of one the charges allege that Mr McCartan ‘behaved in a threatening and abusive manner which would be likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm’ from 1 May to 25 July, 2023. The charges relate to the alleged victim, Independent Crotlieve cllr, Jarlath Tinnelly.
The defendant also faces charges of harassment and two separate counts of improper use of communications; of menacing character and causing anxiety during the same dates.
District judge Eamonn King adjourned the case to May 23.
