Parked cars on roads outside Newry Train Station are to be issued with fixed penalty notices moving forward, say police.
The announcement was made by Newry Police via social media yesterday (November 4).
Officers were made aware of parking issues in the Derrybeg Lane area and attended to assess the situation.
A PSNI spokesperson explained: “Due to the way traffic is parking on both sides of the road this is causing an obstruction for large buses and 40ft lorries that use this part of the road.
“Some vehicles were also causing obstruction to pedestrians. If there is no dedicated bays you can not park on the bridge over the A1 or either side of that road.”
Officers leafleted all offending vehicles and issued one fixed penalty notice for parking in a junction.
The statement added: “Going forward any offending vehicle will be ticketed.”
Back in August of this year, Sinn Féin councillor Declan Murphy said the area had become “a victim of its own success” as rising passenger numbers outstrip the station’s current parking capacity.
Alongside party colleague Cllr Aidan Mathers, he had met residents living beside the station, who complained that drivers were abandoning cars on footpaths and along nearby streets when the main car park fills up.
Earlier this summer it was confirmed that 40 additional car parking spaces are to be added at Newry Train Station, with work beginning in September. Double yellow lines will also be introduced on approach roads as part of the scheme, in a bid to prevent dangerous on-street parking.
