A new car park is being planned in Newry city centre.

Consisting of 49 spaces in total, an application has now been drawn up.

The new car park will be located at Cecil Street.

And it has been planned now ahead of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s new base being built.

A report accompanying the application confirms it will be for the use of council staff associated with the proposed Civic Hub located off Abbey Way.

“All spaces will be free of charge and access will be controlled through a barrier system accessible via a fob,” it adds.

“The development site is currently vacant after the demolition of the former Kearns and Murtagh commercial vehicle garage that was previously on site.”

In terms of access, the report states: “Pedestrian access to the car park is via the vehicle entrance.

At this location pedestrian footways on Cecil Street provide a route north towards Newry Leisure Centre and south towards Newry City Centre/the Civic Hub site.

“All footways along the frontage of the site are proposed to be 2m wide. Internally a zebra crossing is provided to enable safe movement from the access to the spaces.”

The proposals will be advertised shortly.
