A 23-year-old man has been charged to court following a dramatic incident in Newry which began with an altercation in the driveway of a house and ended in an arrest at a busy retail park.
Police received a report shortly after midday on Thursday, October 2, of a disturbance in The Demesne, where a man allegedly forcibly removed a woman from her car – a white Nissan Qashqai – before driving off in the vehicle.
Responding officers encountered the car at Dorans Hill, but it failed to stop and instead made off at speed towards Chancellors Road.
The vehicle was later located at Damolly Retail Park around 3pm, where officers arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of multiple offences.
He has now been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, hijacking, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and possession of a Class C controlled drug, among other driving and drugs-related offences.
The accused is due to appear before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, October 4.
As is standard procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
